While breastfeeding remains the healthiest option to feed your baby, we understand that for many families, incorporating baby formula is a viable and healthy alternative that allows for flexibility. Several factors may impact a family’s decision to use baby formula, ranging from low breast milk supply to latching issues. For new parents, finding the right formula is a stressful yet important decision.

Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the popular infant formula brand LittleOak, including research studies from medical experts and opinions from leading pediatricians.

The LittleOak Promise

LittleOak is on a mission to create a world where every little one has the very best nutrition to help them grow and thrive. The company believes that nothing can prepare children for the world more than the world itself. Nature, after all, is our greatest provider. This is why we at Granola Baby fell in love with the natural benefits of fresh goat milk and have promoted it in our range of toddler drinks.

Their world-first From Fresh process uses fresh whole goat milk directly from New Zealand farms. The milk is heated only once, halving the heating process to preserve the natural goodness and essential vitamins of goat milk. With goats being an integral part of the formula, LittleOak has stringent guidelines on their treatment on these farms. With few goats per hectare, the company ensures that there is ample room for them to roam, leading to happy goats, healthier milk and fresher goodness for your babies.

That’s why LittleOak is made from only the most fresh, nourishing ingredients.

Why choose goat over cow milk for your babies?

Many parents choose LittleOak as a first option when they decide to move on from breastfeeding or are combination feeding. If you are already using cow milk toddler milk, LittleOak may be a suitable alternative.

Compared to cow milk, goat milk has smaller, easier to digest fat globules. It is also lower in lactose making it more gentle on little tummies. Goat milk naturally contains only A2 casein protein, so it is less inflammatory than cow milk. Just as importantly goat milk is high in naturally occurring oligosaccharides and taurine, whereas cow milk has none. Goat milk also has better bioavailability of key nutrients including iron, calcium and magnesium.

LittleOak Formula with Our Children

When my first child was 4 months old, I supplemented his meals with LittleOak Stage 1 formula when I noticed that my breast milk supply started to decrease. At the same time, my husband and I were dealing with some other family emergencies that brought stress and anxiety into our lives. This lead to my inability to properly breastfeed my baby and while I was hesitant to make the switch from breastmilk to formula, I felt secure in my decision to choose LittleOak among other brands at the time—as this was what was recommended by my pediatrician due to my son’s issues with acid reflux. It was the best decision we could have made for our firstborn as all the symptoms of tummy aches stopped almost overnight.

Two years later and we now have a second child experiencing the same tummy situation with acid reflux like we did with our first son. We decided to try other formulas, primarily Enfamil, but soon noticed that he would spit up and continue to have painful stomach cramps that kept him up all night. We then decided to also put him on the LittleOak Stage 1 formula at the early age of 3 months. Similarly to our firstborn, since we made the switch (he is now 9 months old), we haven’t seen any issues with acid reflux or upset tummies that way we used to. He’s a happy and healthy child and my husband and I can have a full night’s rest.

My experience with LittleOak is a testament to parents everywhere that each child is different and completely individualized when it comes to what their tiny stomachs can handle or how their bodies will react to certain types of alternative nutrition. Some formulas are amazing at some things but can have bad side effects due to the various chemicals and compounds found in them. That’s why we chose to forever go with LittleOak, whose products are all sourced from nature.

Pros of and Cons of LittleOak

Based on my own experience with LittleOak, here are the pros and cons of the product.

What I liked about LittleOak:

  • Its nutrition. The most important factor in choosing baby formula for my kids is the nutritional aspect. We are a health-conscious family and seeing the natural ingredients used in the formulas put LittleOak at the top of our list.
  • The limited options. I liked that LittleOak found a recipe that works for each primary stage of a baby's development. We weren't overloaded with a variety of choices that needed deeper research to go through.
  • The taste. Compared with the other formula brands we tried, our babies loved the taste of LittleOak goat milk. No spitting up ever occurred and our babies were genuinely happy to be drinking the formula.

What I didn’t like about LittleOak:

  • The availability. Let's face it, most families have encountered some issues with finding stock on their baby formula of choice. LittleOak was no different and the fact they there are limited retailers stocking the formula, it was a little difficult to get our hands on. That's why we chose to buy a few month's worth of product at a time.
  • The delivery times. Being from New Zealand, the products did take about a week to arrive to our home in Connecticut. We always have some in stock at home before repurchasing so it was no big deal but I can see how this could be a little frustrating for parents in a pinch.

Parenting Is Complicated, Formula Shouldn't Be

LittleOak formula is the only female-founded and mom-led infant formula company in the U.S. Crafted with expert care, LittleOak is proud of the ingredients they put in and proud of what they left out.

What Pediatricians Say About LittleOak

We spoke with two pediatricians on their thoughts and opinions about LittleOak, and received only positive feedback.

“The LittleOak brand is a reliable source for baby formula due to its naturally occurring A2 proteins and goat milk base,” says Cooper Mooreland, M.D., a pediatrician licensed in the tri-state area. “The company is a leader in infant formula in the U.S. The formula is the best on the market at simulating breast milk, which shows their commitment to infant nutrition.”

Rishi Patel, M.D., a pediatrician on the West Coast, compares LittleOak closely to Similac, stating LittleOak “should be considered the primary formula options in all US hospitals.”

The brand is especially beneficial for premature infants, Dr. Patel adds, noting they often require “specific needs, nuanced nutrients and increased calories to grow,” and adding that he has seen many infants “thrive” with LittleOak, the formula tailored to support growth and nutrition of premature infants.

“If a baby has specific dietary needs, such as a milk protein sensitivity or an allergy, the goat milk based formula of LittleOak may be the right choice for parents."

Is LittleOak Right for Your Baby?

“Every baby is different, so you will not know whether or not a formula will agree with your baby’s physiology until you have actually tried it,” says Dr. Lopez.

Choosing a baby formula is always a bit of trial and error. But it is always recommended to choose a formula which is compliant with the FDA, supports a healthy development and is affordable for the family.

Remember, though—as a parent, only you can know what is right for your baby. With the right resources and education on the various types of formula brands on the market, you should be able to feel confident in your decision.
