The short version
- We score formulas on five criteria: ingredients, digestion and tolerance, safety and sourcing, value and access, and real-family feedback.
- We only rank formulas that can be legally sold in the U.S., and we remove any formula under an active recall.
- We check FDA recall notices before every update and review every ranking at least once a quarter.
- We earn money from affiliate links and from selling some products in our shop. We tell you which products we sell on every page.
Why we publish our methodology
Choosing a formula is one of the first big decisions many parents make, and most of the “best formula” lists online don’t explain how they were put together. We think you should be able to see exactly how we reach our picks, what we weigh most heavily, and where our business interests are, so you can decide how much to trust us.
Our five ranking criteria
Every formula we rank is scored out of 10. Each score reflects how a formula performs across these five areas, relative to the other formulas in the same category (for example, goat milk formulas are compared with other goat milk formulas).
| Criterion | What we look at |
|---|---|
| Ingredients & nutrition | Protein source, carbohydrate source (we favor lactose-first formulas for most babies), fat blend, DHA and ARA, and breast-milk-inspired additions such as HMOs, MFGM and prebiotics. We read the full ingredient panel, not the front of the can. |
| Digestion & tolerance | Formula type (standard, gentle, partially or extensively hydrolyzed, goat milk), whey-to-casein ratio, and how the formula is positioned for fussiness, gas or spit-up. |
| Safety & sourcing | U.S. legal status, recall history, manufacturing transparency, certifications (such as USDA Organic or EU Organic) and how clearly the brand communicates testing. |
| Value & access | Cost per ounce of prepared formula, subscription and bundle options, and how easy it is to buy consistently in the U.S. |
| Real-family feedback | What parents in our community tell us about mixing, foaming, taste acceptance and switching, alongside public reviews. This never outweighs safety or nutrition. |
Our research process
- Build the shortlist. We start with formulas that are legally available in the U.S. for the category we’re covering.
- Read the label. We review the full ingredient list and nutrition panel for each stage we cover, using the manufacturer’s current label.
- Check safety. We search the FDA recall and outbreak database and remove any product under an active recall. Our recall tracker lists what we’re watching.
- Compare value. We calculate an approximate cost per prepared ounce using current list prices.
- Score and write. We score each formula against our criteria and explain the trade-offs in plain language, including what we don’t like.
- Edit and fact-check. A second editor checks claims against primary sources such as the FDA, CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics.
How often we update
- Recall checks: at least monthly, and immediately when the FDA announces an infant formula recall or outbreak.
- Full ranking reviews: at least once a quarter, or sooner when a formula changes its recipe or a new formula launches.
- Dates you can trust: every ranking shows the date it was last updated at the top of the page.
How we make money
Granola Baby is reader-supported. We earn money in three ways, and we tell you about each one:
- Affiliate links. Some links to other retailers earn us a small commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you.
- Our own shop. We sell some of the products we review, including LittleOak, Bobbie and Kabrita formula. Rankings show when a product is sold by Granola Baby.
- Brand partnerships. We partner with It’s My Leche, a donor breast milk company. Because it isn’t a formula, it is never ranked against formulas.
Commercial relationships do not change scores. When a formula we don’t sell is the best choice, we rank it first and link to where you can buy it.
Medical information
Our content is researched against guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, CDC and FDA, but it is general information, not medical advice. Formula needs vary, especially for babies born early or with medical conditions, so always talk to your pediatrician before starting or switching formula.
Corrections and feedback
If you spot an error, a changed recipe or an outdated price, please contact us. We review every correction request and update the page if we got something wrong.

Frequently asked questions
Do brands pay to be ranked on Granola Baby?
No. Brands can’t pay for a ranking or a higher score. We do earn affiliate commissions and sell some products in our shop, and we disclose this on every page.
Do you test formulas in a lab?
No. We don’t run laboratory tests. We analyze labels, regulatory and recall information, published guidance and parent feedback. When a brand publishes third-party testing, we take it into account.
How do you handle recalls?
We remove any formula that is under an active FDA recall from our rankings and list it on our recall tracker until the recall is resolved.
Why are some top picks not sold in your shop?
Because we rank formulas on merit. If the best option is sold elsewhere, we link you to it.
